History

The first village on the contemporary Shakopee was established by Chief Shakopee of the Mdewakanton Dakota in 17th century.  By the end of 18th century the Ojibwa nation began pushing into Dakota territory and in the middle of 19th century the permanent Shakopee village was acting as a boundary to the Ojibwa.

In 1851 Thomas A. Holmes established a trading post and Shakopee boomed as a commerce exchange site between  river and rail at Murphy’s Landing leading a life of  isolated city in the Minnesota River Valley.

By 1960 the metropolitan area expanded and Shakopee transformed into Twin Cities’ suburb.
